Sleeping on Cloud Nine: Unveiling the Top 3 Mattresses and Why You Need It!

Let's be honest, when was the last time you purchased a new mattress for yourself? If you have to stop and really think about it - it is likely time to invest in a new one! On average, a good-quality mattress can last between 7-10 years. I admit, with all of the competing needs of a family, pouring money into a mattress for MY bedroom has always been at the lower end of the long list of needs. After I hit 40, I started tossing and turning a bit more than usual. Over the next few years, it became more and more of an issue. My husband also started experiencing numbness in one of his arms from an old pilot injury and it was waking him up most nights. We tried several tactics to address our sleepless nights. We then started thinking about when exactly we replaced our mattress. Let's just say that we have pictures of me on that mattress holding our now 18-year old son when he was a newborn. That's when we realized, it is time!

For women over 40, prioritizing sleep becomes even more essential for overall well-being and health and it also becomes more difficult. Sleep is truly the bedrock for wellness. Many factors will make sleep more difficult as we age and it is important that we take the time to combat these issues and take control of our sleep. A good nighttime routine and the right bedroom environment are two important factors to consider. One of the largest factors, and one I would recommend addressing first, is choosing the right mattress. Opting for a mattress that offers adequate support for changing sleep patterns and body needs is crucial. A mattress with features such as targeted pressure relief, temperature control and motion isolation can help alleviate any discomfort or disturbances, promoting uninterrupted sleep throughout the night.

It feels there is a mattress store on every corner in most towns! We walked into several and several times felt overwhelmed by the options, the sales pitch AND the varied price options! So, we came home and started doing research in the comfort of our own home. Here is one little tip we found - you can purchase just about any mattress on Amazon and Amazon is fantastic about backing up their products and with Prime, shipping is usually free and returns are easy. I liked being able to research features, read reviews, check out prices, and no salesman was standing beside me! We ended up liking 2 different mattresses. Read below to hear about the 3 we reviewed, which 2 we loved the most, and which one we kept and love!

Here is a breakdown of our top 3 picks!

Known for its unique Purple Grid technology, the Purple Mattress offers exceptional comfort and support. With its innovative design, it provides a perfect balance of firmness and pressure relief, making it ideal for various sleep positions. Plus, it's durability and motion isolation feature make it a top choice for couples. During training, my husband's instructor raved about his Purple mattress and that is how this one landed on our list to review.

My favorite thing about Purple: you have 100 day 100% guarantee! You can't go wrong with a 100 day trial! The mattress is also very soft and feels cool to the touch.

Pros:

  • Innovative Purple Grid technology provides excellent pressure relief and support.
  • Breathable design helps regulate temperature for a cooler sleep.
  • Durable materials ensure long-lasting comfort and performance.

Cons:

  • Some users may find the firmness level too unique or unfamiliar.
  • Initial off-gassing odor may be present when first unpackaged.

Price Range:

Queen: $1,149 - $1,799

King: $1,449 - $2,199

Cal King: $1,449 - $2,199

Renowned for its memory foam mattresses, Tempur-Pedic delivers unparalleled contouring and support. The Tempur material conforms to the body, relieving pressure points and ensuring a restful night's sleep. Tempur-Pedic also offers a SmartClimate feature to help keep you cool all night long (and, THAT is something we NEED at this time of life!) While slightly pricier, its long-lasting quality and reputation for superior comfort make it a worthwhile investment.

Tempur-Pedic offers the same great guarantee: you have 100 day 100% guarantee! You can't go wrong with a 100 day trial! I also personally love the climate control with the material in this mattress!

Pros:

  • Superior contouring and pressure relief thanks to Tempur material.
  • Excellent motion isolation minimizes disturbances from partner movements.
  • Wide range of models and firmness options cater to various sleep preferences.

Cons:

  • Higher price point compared to other brands.

Price Range:

Queen: $2,199 - $3,799

King: $2,799 - $5,699

Cal King: $2,799 - $5,699

3. Casper

Casper mattresses are celebrated for their versatility and affordability. Featuring multiple layers of foam, including memory foam and zoned support, they offer excellent spinal alignment and comfort. Casper's mattresses also excel in motion isolation, making them ideal for light sleepers or couples.

Casper offers the same great guarantee: you have 100 day 100% guarantee!  You can't go wrong with a 100 day trial!

Pros:

  • Versatile foam layers provide balanced support and comfort for most sleepers.
  • Zoned support ensures proper spinal alignment for a comfortable sleep.
  • Affordable pricing makes it accessible to a wide range of consumers.

Cons:

  • Edge support may be lacking compared to other brands, leading to potential sagging over time.
  • Some users may prefer a more traditional feel compared to all-foam mattresses.

Price Range:

Queen: $1,095 - $1,695

King: $1,295 - $1,995

Cal King: $1,295 - $1,995

*prices can vary depending on sales/specials/etc.*

So, which one did we choose?

My favorite was the Temper-Pedic Lux-Breeze 2.0. It wasn't even a competition for me. This mattress was a dream and, it helped me continue to dream! I will own and keep this mattress one day!

However, we purchased and kept the Purple Mattress. I have no complaints about the Purple Mattress. It was a bit strange at first to me that you don't use a box spring so it felt very small (short) on our bed frame. We ended up using our old box spring with it because it made me feel a bit better about the aesthetic. Here is the reason we have kept this mattress. My husband has a cervical neck injury from being a military pilot. He was waking up with his arm numb almost nightly, sometimes, it would wake him up multiple times a night. The Purple Mattress and the purple pillow (this is the strangest pillow and a bit harder to make an aesthetic bed with, but, when my husband does not use this pillow, he always wakes up in the middle of the night!) fixed this for him. We have now had this mattress for 2 years and as long as he is asleep in this bed, he doesn't wake up with a numb arm. As much as I loved the Temper-Pedic Lux-Breeze for me, the Purple Mattress does the job for me and I am thrilled at the results for my husband!

I will say, the Casper mattress is a fantastic choice for a good night's sleep on a budget. This is the mattress we chose for a guest bedroom bed because it is more affordable but offers all of the support and comfort for a great night's sleep. My husband's neck injury is what steered us to needing (and loving!) the Purple Mattress

So, if you have pictures on your current mattress of you and your now grown children, it is time. If you've been waiting for someone to tell you this, I will be your person - you NEED a new mattress! It is a bigger chunk of change than most items you purchase, trust me, that is what held me back to for years. It's also "boring" to some extent because it isn't something you or your guests really see and enjoy. I get it, I do. However, you spend a large portion of your life IN your bed. Sleep is truly a bedrock to your health, physically and mentally. You NEED to invest in YOU and your sleep.

15-Minute Upper Body Workout for Brand New Beginners Using Dumbbells

So, you’re ready to work out? First, let me congratulate you! This quick and efficient workout targets all the major upper-body muscle groups. Each exercise is designed to be simple and effective for those new to working out. You will only need dumbbells for these exercises. At this time, I would recommend going with lighter weights (a pair of 5lb dumbbells) and you will slowly be able to increase this weight over time. Perform each exercise for the specified number of reps, resting minimally between exercises to keep the workout within 15 minutes. I recommend doing only 1 set for this first week. You will do each exercise for the recommended repetitions and then move to the next exercise. Do not repeat the exercises. Do this 3 times this week with a rest day in between. Remember, this isn't a sprint. We want to slowly build up to a fitness routine and avoid injury. Slow and steady is what will 'win' this race! If you haven't already incorporated walking into your routine, this would be a perfect complement to your new fitness routine as well!
