Let's Get Moving: A Beginner's Guide to Starting Your Running Journey After 40

Are you ready to add a little more pep to your step and embrace the joy of running? Are you hesitant? Are you not sure if you can do this? If you're a woman over 40 who's been considering lacing up those sneakers and hitting the pavement, I'm here to tell you: it's never too late to start, and you're absolutely capable of rocking this! I have helped many friends over the years begin their running journey, now let me help you!

First off, let's talk about comfort and support. As a woman in her prime, your body deserves the best, especially when it comes to your feet. Invest in a quality pair of running shoes that offer ample support and cushioning. I promise, this truly is step 1! (read here if you don’t know where to start with shoes!)  Trust me, it makes all the difference!

Now, onto your journey. Begin with baby steps – or should I say, walking steps. Start by taking brisk walks around your neighborhood or a nearby park for about 20-30 minutes. This will help get your muscles warmed up and your body ready for more. I would recommend doing this for a good 2 weeks. Start getting into the habit of lacing those shoes up and getting outside!

Once you're feeling comfortable with your walks, it's time to add a little pep to your step with some intervals. Alternate between walking and jogging in short bursts. For example, jog for one minute, then walk for two minutes to catch your breath. Repeat this cycle for about 20-30 minutes. As you start feeling stronger and more confident, gradually increase the duration of your jogging intervals and decrease the walking intervals. How far and how fast you are going DOES NOT MATTER. Just enjoy your 20-30  minute journey!

Consistency is key, my friend. Aim to get out there and move at least three times a week. Find a routine that fits your schedule and stick to it. Whether it's early mornings before the world wakes up, during your lunch break, or in the evenings as the sun sets, make it a priority to prioritize your health and well-being. Pull out a calendar and SCHEDULE this time BEFORE the week even begins!

As you start to build up your stamina, remember to listen to your body. Pay attention to any aches or pains, and don't hesitate to take it easy if you need to. Rest days are just as important as running days, so give your body the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate.

Set realistic goals for yourself and celebrate your progress along the way. Maybe it's completing your first mile without stopping or participating in a local fun run. Whatever your goals may be, know that every step forward is a victory worth celebrating.

Lastly, embrace the journey. Running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other – it's about feeling alive, strong, and empowered. Enjoy the fresh air, the sense of freedom, and the satisfaction of knowing that you're taking charge of your health and happiness.

I will discuss it in another post but, be sure to stay hydrated, fuel your body properly, and STRETCH after each walk/run!

So, what are you waiting for, friend? It's time to lace up those sneakers, hit the pavement, and embark on your running journey. You've got this, and I'll be cheering you on every step of the way!

Check back often as I will be sharing lots of times and tricks along the way. I have learned so many lessons the hard way, let me help you avoid these same missteps!

Happy running!
